Hard to tell. The question should be: Would he be worse?
Barak reminds me of two other presidents: Kennedy and Carter. Both basically unknown prior to their run for the presidency.
I was a teen-ager when Kennedy was in office, all I remember was everyone liked him. On the other hand, Carter was crucified for his handling of economy and foreign affairs.
Both were Democrats... Go figure. Makes you think it's the candidate and not the party... What a novel thought!

Being from Illinois I have followed Barack Obama since he ran for congress back in 2000 and got trounced by the incumbent (Bobby Rush) for among other things, not being black enough. Its funny how his perceived lack of blackness is what makes him so appealing to the rest of the country. He was the most qualified person when he ran for U.S. Senate after being a state senator for 7 years but not too many people were feeling him until he beat the pants off the rest of the field in the democratic primary.
As for his senate career, its hard to stand out on a legislative record when
1) your party doesnt control a thing, and
2) there are probably at least 75 other people who think they can be president also.
Hell the only thing GW Bush accomplished before being president was executing scores of people. So I believe Barack will be ready by 2008

As a democrat and not from Illinois, I am not sure yet. What I have seen I like. He is a well spoken man. I feel he is a bit young to know about the tremendous responsibility of the job. He is on the inexperienced side also. However, I have no objection to me learning more about him. What he stands for, and I got two years to make my decision, So I will do my job and find out more about him. Ask this question again in about 6 months or a year.

Honestly I have no idea... apart from thinking he's a good speaker and agreeing with pretty much every position he's ever taken (which isn't that many) - I know very little about him. I can say that I think he'd make a better president than George W. Bush or pretty much anyone else the Republicans are thinking about running (unless they run Olympia Snow or Lincoln Chaffe who would both get my vote over Obama at the moment).

I agree with Random ID. Obama might make a good president some day, but he's not ready. If the DNC pushes him into the position too fast, it might break what would otherwise be a sterling political career.

Considering that he has not accomplished anything in 2 years as a Senator, it's hard to tell. While he seems likable and charismatic, we said the same about Bill Clinton, and remember where that got us?

I think he would make an awesome president. He truly seems to have his head on his shoulders. I am appalled at individuals assumptions that because his name SOUNDS foreign that he has to be African and not a US citizen. He was born in Hawaii of an African father from Kenya and an American born mother from Kansas so he is VERY much a US citizen.
I truly hope he runs in '08 and I know I will be voting for him!!
