They technically should. Whenever I wear a hat, I do, but I don't wear those frilly, big, women's hats. I can't stand those. There might be a different etiquette rule for those types of hats.

I would think so, but here is what I found:
From *Showing Respect for the Flag":
The military salute is rendered by men and women in uniform (and may also include boys and girls in the uniform of Scouts, CAPS, ROTC, and others). Those not in uniform salute the flag by standing at attention, tall and straight with the left arm at the side, and placing the right hand over the heart. Men who are wearing a hat should remove the hat with their right hand and hold it over their shoulder. The right HAND, not the hat, should rest over the heart.
From * ETIQUETTE for Hats and Caps*:
A woman may leave her hat on indoors or during the playing of The National Anthem, unless it is considered unisex like a baseball cap. When wearing such a unisex cap, a woman should follow the same guidelines as for men.

I don't know the official rules, but it seems to me it doesn't matter if you're male or female, it's a gesture of respect to take off your hat during the National Anthem. So, yes I think that would be very disrespectful to think you're exempt from doing so.

I was taught years ago that a woman's hair is her crown of glory. When standing for The National Anthem I am praying for our military, police and firemen so I keep my hat on out or respect to keep them as my crown of glory. grandmajudy

Techincally- No I don't think so. It used to be that hats were a huge part of a womans wardrobe, and so they never took their hats off when they entered a building or during paryers, but men always did. That is how the old rules of ettiquite used to be.
However, these days a hat is not an essential part of a girls wardrobe, so she probably should, I would.

As a veteran I feel the hats should come off.But some of the old school of thought is that only men remove their head gear. But to pay respect to all the men and women who served our country and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice their lifes.
So with this all head gear should come off.

No, proper etiquette allows a woman to keep her hat on. Though it would also be proper for everyone to place your right hand over your heart while the national anthem is played.

No. It is perfectly acceptable for women to keep their head covered. But, they can remove their hats if they want to.

Women's rights in regards to equality would lead me to think, everyone is equal and should show respect equally. So yes, they should remove their hat. You can't pick what you want and what you don't want.
