Because America was originally a British colony, and settled primarily by the same. The influx of immigrants from other European countries didn't start until after the Revolution, and at a slow enough pace that they had to adapt.
It would be too difficult, and unnecessary to create an entirely new language. The only real alternative would have been to take on one or more of the native tongues, but with their populations being decimated by disease, and the original settlers pushing them out of their territories rather than integrating them, that was unlikely.
Yes, Americans are rather arrogant in their Eurocentrism. But we learned it from the best.

Americans speak English because the British took over at the time the British Empire was in power. This is the reason that Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some parts of Africa are also English speaking. You should be grateful that other countries apart from your own speak your language. It's easier to make international friendships and it's much easier when you travel. Not all Americans think they're great. It's just one of those stereotypes. I should know (I'm Scottish and have to live with the whole mean, tight, ginger, tartan wearing thing).

Because most of them evidently could't learn the language(s) of the Native Americans who met the boats coming from England and Holland.

Okay, get this.
First, Columbus "discovers" the New World (tm). It gets named "America" and more and more Europeans start coming over here, the Spanish to the Southern and Central parts, and the French and English to the Northern parts. Then these Spaniards, Frenchmen, and Englishmen (among others) start fighting eachother (but not before spreading diseases to and trying to either kill off or "civilize" those that got here before them).
Then, they were fighting and fighting and fighting until, finally, the French-Indian War happened and the Frenchmen were driven much further North. (the Spaniards pretty much stayed to the South. I dunno, I think the tropical climate must have appealed to them or something)
And then the Motherland English exported the uptight Puritans to America (the Puritans were English, by the way).
Are you still with me here? Good.
Anywho, the moral of this story is that USAmerica was colonized by - dee dee dee! - the ENGLISH. The ENGLISH are our ancestors, our distant relatives (dysfuctional, huh? consanguineous, too - look it up).
THEN, we kicked the Englishmen's asses out (we were differentiated from them already as "colonists" and, even though we were the decendants of their own reknowned pioneers, were considered low, base, and even as savage as the wild lands [and people] we were trying to "civilize") and formed our own government and identity. The Conquerors were starting to lose their momentum, but they still "mothered" this land and THAT is why we speak English.

Americans speak English because this country was originally settled by...guess who? THE BRITISH, genius.
As for copying, please look into the inventions of the following things and learn who it was who invented them:
Powered aircraft
Electric lights
Nuclear power
Computers
Solar energy
Telephones
Audio
Video
Telegraph
Artificial Heart
Sewing Machine
Polio Vaccine
Integrated Circuits
Scotch Tape
Air conditioning
Aluminum foil
Alternating current
Band Aids
Bifocals
Blood banks
The list goes on and on. If you have a problem with the behavior of our current government or of some of our citizens, fine. As we all know, the British are paragons of perfect behavior throughout history. But really kid, expand your learning a bit before you criticize anyone 'copying' stuff.
P.S. If copying is a problem for you, please stop using your computer. It was copied from an American invention.
