If the PS2 shuts down completely after you turn it on, I don't think this has anything to do with a game.

check to see if the power connectors are loose at all and look for any burnt marks near the power connector both where it plugs into the wall and where it connects to the back of the PS2.

based on the info you provided, this sounds like a power supply problem. If the power supply is cooked, it would probably be cheaper to just replace the PS2 rather than dealing with Sony.

By the way, the odds that the new game had any malicious code on it is about a billion to one. If your copy of the game had malicious code, then every copy of that same game would also have it. This theory is bogus.

Also using cheat codes in no way will ever affect the functionality of the PS2. You might screw up a save game file, but the system itself will NEVER fail mechanically because of cheats. That is a ridiculous theory.

The new game that started this could have had some malicious code on it, causing the PS2 to break down, just as it could if you kept using too many cheats and/or codes for certain games, even when you don't save with them still activated. IMO, the PS2 is poorly built and very fragile, compared to, say, the Gamecube. It heats up quickly. The only reason we're on our SECOND PS2 (and the "PS1" was pretty crappy, too) is that my son and I LOVE playing GTA, esp San Andreas and he has other games on that he likes.

One thing I tried on our newest one is cleaning the disk w/water regularly. It seemed to help. I've heard that there is a way to (sometimes) repair damage done by disks, but you'd have to check out their official site, or other gaming sites, for the details.

You can try to get a replacement console, but it may be too late. Give it a shot!

You need to save the play? Do you have enough memory? ARe you using the right version, where was the game manufactured? Sometimes they are not compatible if its a copy.
Return the game to the seller. They can return it to the manaufacturer. It could be a copy glitch.
