Until 2004 the Syracuse Orange used to be known as the Syracuse Orangemen and Orangewomen. The name was officially changed to the Orange in order to be gender neutral and for the Nickname to be the school color.

Yeah they were called Orangemen for a long time. But then they got concerns they might be offending some people. So now they're just fruit.

and more importantly then the gender issue and not being racist in regards to native americans, nike gave the school a big contract to change their name...
