We have a 2000 Ford focus SE. The windshield wipers stop working while driving in the rain. We looked it up on the internet and found there had been a recall on the wiper motor. When we called our local ford co. where the car was purchased, they told us there had never been a recall on the ford focus at all. Its all over the internet that it has been recalled for many things, and these sites even list the parts # and the date of the recalls. We called a toll
free # for the ford co. that is supposed to give you a list of recalls based on your vin#. When we called this #, the recording said the same thing. No recall for this car. In the meantime, we are stuck with a car that we can't drive when it's raining. My wife was taking my 6 yr. old grandson to school when it first happened. She couldn't see anything. she slowly got into the turn lane and just had to stop and wait for them to come back on. The finally did, but they cut off 8 more times before she could get back home.

Recalls are not just based on vehicle makes and models. The VIN is often what is used to determing a vehicle's eligibility for a campaign of recall. That is why you are able to find a recall that pertains to certain similar vehicles of the same year even but when you contact a dealer or manufacturer itself and they run the VIN they find that your vehicle was manufactured outside of the VIN breakpoins for campaign elligibility. Meaning that you vehicle rolled off the assembly line either before or after the problem noted in the recall was a relevant issue.
It is federal law that all of us manufacturers have to complete any open recall on any vehicle, even salvage title vehicles reguardless of age. Ford would not slip up here. Besides the dealer gets paid by the the manufacturer for the work they perform. They make money doing these. Just because you don't pay doesn't mean the dealer does it for free. So he would probably love to perform the recall. However, if he does and then submits a claim to Ford warranty, the claim will reject because your specific VIN is not included in the recall. In other words, your dealer most likely isn't doing anything wrong and isn't trying to be mean to you, they just don't want to work on something and not get paid for it. I can't blame them.

I know this was not the answer you wanted. The answer to your question is, "you can't (legally)." But hopefully this gave you some insight into the recall process and helps you understand your dealer's stance in the situation.

I agree with rackel and clint.. Ford is bound by US law to repair any vehicles involved in a recall BUT as clint said, it's usually build date specific, your car apparently was built outside of the time frame of the recall (If you would get to read the whole wiper cover recall instead of just the bit you find on the internet, you would know this as the date you are refering to is probably the dates the recall came out) and a list of vin numbers of cars bult on what days are kept at factory headquarters just for this reason.

The wiper motor is probably weak and needs to be replaced. (without diagnosing it I can't tell you for sure) This normally happens on any kind of car espcially in snow country where the motor has to work sometimes again the snow on the windshield. You can call Ford and ask about help but in my experience, it's usually a no on a car that is 7 years old.

Sorry for the cold truth

Easiest technique to uncover out in case your Ford has any recollects related to it's to name (taking it to them is quicker) the regional Ford trader and ask them to run the VIN Number. They might be competent to print out a sheet that has the record of recollects on it that Ford can pay for which are hooked up for your van. and in addition if there have been any maintenance that Ford paid for (Ford Motor Company no longer the Ford trader) ago 12 months if there have been any it is going to be on that printout. By the way in which. Just seeing that there's a take into account proven for that 12 months make and mannequin doesn't suggest Ford can pay for it. It HAS to be hooked up to that VIN at the FORD printout no longer a few web page on the internet. If it is a "Service Bulletin" It WILL NOT be blanketed except your manufacturing unit warrant continues to be in outcome. Which on a 1999 it's not.

jot down the vin # and go to the ford dealer and ask them if they can look it up to see if there are "any" recalls on the car. Don't be specific...just ask in general. If they say there is no recall...then odds are they are telling the truth..as recalls normally a safety factor, and it is in their best interest to fix it. Ford motor company reimburses the dealer for parts and labor, so there is no reason they wouldn't be up front with you on this.

Unfortunately you will probably need to take it to a shop for replacement or do it yourself with a repair manual that you can get at a local auto parts store. You can get you some RainX for your windshields in the mean time until you purchase the part or get it to the shop. Be careful and good luck.

The recall you are referring to, involves replacing the wiper motor GEAR COVER. I doubt that this would fix the problem you are having with your wiper system.
