Coming to the Wasatch front (in Utah) would nicely fit the bill for both of you. We have a shortage of Pharmacists and a bustling high tech community. The schools are very good (we have the standardized test scores to prove it) and it is an excellent place to raise kids. The state is beautiful with lofty mountain peaks, red-rock country, high chaparral, and basin deserts. I live here by choice.
Oops, you mentioned a problem with the cold.......never mind.

There's a decent future for it, but you're severely capping your career potential by just getting an "associates" degree. You'll likely never get beyond the first rung or two of the ladder. A bachelor's degree is really the bare minimum to have a decent career path. Even then it's a struggle. A master's is the only sure-bet to mid-level advancement.

The cities of the sun belt are growing rapidly. I'd expect there would be plenty of openings for skilled professionals in places like Arizona, Texas, Florida, and so forth. With the influx of northerners I think the schools have gotten much better than their old reputations.

What "cold problem?" I'm unaware of any "cold problem" in Metro Detroit. If you mean you don't like the fact people get sick then you're out of luck. If you'd prefer a warm climate I'd look toward Austin (Texas), Atlanta (Georgia), or Metro DC.

Northern New Jersey, or if you like urban, New York City. It has the jobs and the resources.
