There is a great chance the baby will survive!! They have saved babies below a pound before!

According to statistics on premature babies in the late 1990's, babies born at 22 weeks or less have little chance of survival. However, babies between 23-24 weeks have an increased survival rate by 3-4% per day and 20-30% between 24-26 weeks. Survival for premature babies after 26 weeks is as high as 60-90%. It all depends on the baby's condition at the time of delivery and how well the baby improves with the medical care provided.

With the modern advances in medicine and technology, many preterm babies with appropriate care may survive. While some may not have any problem in the future, many others may experience developmental difficulties

I was told my baby would be delivered at 20 weeks, and that she'd have a 60-70% chance of survival. By sheer miracle and prayer, we made it to 30 weeks, but she still only weighed 1 pound 9 oz. She is now 2, and thriving! No complications other than having apnea and slow heart rate for 4-5 months after birth, which cleared up with meds and time. She's now the smartest kid on the block.

I think the survival rate of your friend's child depends on lots of factors, including, the general health of the baby (other than being preemie - such as downs, spinal bifita, etc.), the skill of the hospital staff and most importantly, the power of prayer. I have no doubt in my mind that everyone's prayers, including my own, is why my daughter is as healthy as she is now.

Best of luck to your friend, and God bless!

The odds aren't very good, but little baby's can surprise you. When I was born in the 1970's they said that the chances where not good that I would live and I did. Do lots of praying. I wish the best for you and your friend during this time.

that's about how much my cousin weighed when born. (he turned out just fine!) There's always the possibility. The doctors will do everything they can for the baby. Hope and pray for the best.
