I don't think any date can be given; it has been used since before written history, that includes written chinese history. It seems to be fairly common knowledge throughout time, though it's toxic properties are only recently known (Very recently, think how long ago it was mercury thermomiters were being put in babies mouths), and it's porperties in heat are also antient knowledge, though they weren't properly explored until the 1800s.

From what I can tell, there is not exact date. Ancien Chinese and Egyptians discovered it. All the links are helpful in finding info about Mercury, but the third is probably the most helpful.

It was discovered in prehistory. Probably about the same time as Copper approximately 3600BC.
