i hve heard bush has signed a deal to go ahead with building a fence around the mexico /u.s border.people rejoyced when the berlin wall came down so why are the americans building one ,i could ask the same question to the isreali's,the berlin wall built to keep western evil out of communist east but as soon as it came down, a.i.d.s, human trafficking, drugs, homosexuality ,typhoid, etc has increased like a virus in the former soviet countries, but i want to know what the reason is for the new fence being built in the u.s.are we turing back the clock to the days of the cold war?

It's the same thing people from East Germany wanted to cross to West Germany for a better life so the government built the Berlin wall so that the East Germans couldn't cross over the U.S. built the fence to try to keep immigrants who want a better life from crossing to the U.S. it's pretty much the exact same thing it seams the U.S. is starting to do some of the things the much hated communists had done whatever happened to tear down that wall now people are saying put up a wall I think we are turning the clock back except this time the U.S. is going to be viewed as the bad guy instead of the good guy by other countries.

The new fence is because our economy is so taxed that it can not possible support the amount of illegal people that just walk across the border on a daily basis. I live in California I see it first hand. It is illegal to enter a country without proper consent to be here. We have tried other means of border security they have all failed. This is what it has come to. If you don't live in a border state than you have never lost a job or been denied financial aid simply because there is no longer enough out there for everyone. A states aid is based on the amount of citizens populating an area they get these numbers from yearly census taking. The numbers don't reflect the illegals and the system gets overloaded. If there was another way then that would be the route to take. But I really don't see another way at this point.

You are very misinformed. The Berlin wall was not built to keep "western evil" out of the communist east but to hold the people captive in east Berlin.Russia held all the eastern European countries AND east Berlin in virtually an iron fist. Read about the Hungarian uprising, as one example. The fence on the USA and Mexican border is being built to keep illegal immigrants out of the USA. Your concept of the two situations is totally in error.

As many others before me have accurately stated... The Berlin Wall was built to divide one nation and keep control over their inhabitants. The fence to be built on our border with Mexico is an effort to prevent illegal aliens from entering our country illegally. It is actually an extention and reinforcement of many fences already existing at our border with Mexico. Is that what is bothering you? That we have a fence or that we have a more effective fence?
I do find it offensive that you describe homosexu@lity and human trafficking as "Western evils".
To shar71vetts - our country was not built or founded on 'illegal immigrants" but on immigrants who came here legally, processed through Ellis Island and other Eastern ports.

Didn't learn anything in your history classes I'm assuming. The Berlin Wall was built by a Communist regime to keep it's people from fleeing East Germany (in other words to keep people in).
The wall in Israel is to keep criminals/terrorists OUT. The wall that should have been build in the country (USA) 30 years ago is also intended to keep illegal border crossers OUT. If people want to enter the United States from Mexico all they have to do is use a LEGAL means to do so as in crossing at the manned border check points.
No one is suggesting that we don't want Mexicans or others coming to this country, what is rightly expected however is that all visitors to this nation obey our laws.

The Berlin Wall was built by East Germany in order to keep East Germans in. The "Rio Grande Wall" will keep illegals out, hopefully.

From what I hear, people are crossing U.S.-Mexico border illegally. So the wall will keep people from crossing border illegally. With the wall, they will have to go to the border checkpoint with a proper document.
Cold War refers to the "tension" between Democratic Western Countries vs. Communist Soviet Union, China, etc.. No, I don't think we're turning any clocks back. Neither countries are communist.

I believe the answer is no The berlin wall was wrong in so many ways because it divided one country. The wall for the Mexico/US border is not dividing one country Mexico is not part of the US and after 9/11 we cannot ignore Illegals coming into our country. Noone is saying forieners can't come here, all we are saying is get a visa and do it legally!
