I an buying my kids a Xbox 360, do I need to buy one of the external fans to? I know there was a heating issue

I think that it is worth it to buy the external fan because it will vastly expand the lifespan of the game console.
but, you should realy wait a couple of weeks longer for the ps3. believe me when i say it but it is a great investment compared to the 360. if you think about the ps3 is a beter value than the 360 because you are geting lots of hardware for your money. thing about it, a blu-ray disk player alone cannot be found for cheaper than $899.
the ps3 will have one built in and will be $499/$599. the cheeper one is edentical to the more expensive one except that the $599 one as a larger hard disk drive (but you can upgrade it very easily) and wireless internet built in so you can run it out of the box on your home wireless network. you will need to run an ethernet cable to the $499 one if you want to use the internet and play online games.

The problem was alledgedly a batch of faulty components used in the initial production run of the 360, not a fault with microsoft's actual design. They claim this problem has been resolved so you shouldn't need an external fan.

There is one big problem with the 360 though....you must not use it standing up. If you do this the laser causes damage to the disc it's trying to read.

There is a heating issue with the Xbox 360, but if you don't want it to over heat keep it away from the sun, DVD players, VCR's, and other consoles. Make sure that is is not to close to the T.V and has a space on a table/T.V cabinet, and try and keep it off the floor.

i have one of the 360's from the first year and i have no problems, but leave it in a well ventilated are and off the ground and u should be good.
