I was just offered a new position at the same place I work at. A 5% raise immediately plus probably a 3% raise at the end of the year. I know I can do the work, but the areas are not my favorite and the last 2 people who held the job complained about it a lot. I could really use some extra money and my supervisor really wants me to take the new position. Do I take it for the money and take the chance of not being as happy?

What's more important to you...money or working where you are happy? Some people just have to complain about something....what they didn't like you may like....and vice versa. If your manager is certain you would be a good fit for the position...take it. That means that it's a great career move for you...and they are confident you will succeed. Follow your heart.

Are you notably more capable than the last two who had that Job? Are you someone who likes a challange? If you can say definitely yes to both questions then take the job. If you are notably better but are not sure about the challenge then maybe it will work out. If you are not measurably more capable than the last two, do not take the job no matter about how you like challenges. And go talk to the last two who had the job. Find out what is necessary for success in that job. Do you have those skills? Better not trust the bosses opinion, he may just want to fill the vacancy. And the raises are not too generous, either. At least you should get the 5%, and the 3% at the end of the year plus a cost of living raise.

Negotiate first. Find out what the people didn't like about it and thend ecide how you would like to reorganize or change the position in such a way that you eliminate the problem. If you just take it for the money and are unhappy, then you lose more than the 5-8% raise. Your boss should want you to be happy and succeed, (s)he doesn;t want to have to keep filling the position or dealing with unhappy employees, so be sure and negotiate. Let your boss know your concerns and get his/her input too, you may be surprised and really come up with some solutions to whatever the problem is. Also, once the position starts be sure and keep your boss informed and make sure that any new or old issues are taken care of, don't just suffer through. Be proactive.

Just because others didn't like it, doesn't mean you will not. Talk with your supervisor about your concerns, it may be possible for you to try the job on a trial basis, say 30 days or so and if you don't like it then return to your old job. I've been at my job for 7 yrs, it's sometimes a pain but everyone else that was here only lasted a year.

If you are not going to be happy 8 hours a day or more, the extra money would not help. Remember that money is not everything in life, but it is necessary. Who knows you may end up liking the new position. Good luck

Gurl , i used to be in that same position where my boss was willing to increase my salary twice. i did not take it because there were too much responsibily and i was a student at that time, and i knew i was not goin to be happy. the best thing to do is to stay where you know you will be happy. you dont want to get sick later on like getting high blood pressure and heart problems, from getting stressed too much, right. why dont you go to school for something that pays more and think you're goin to enjoy?

Express your concerns with the boss and see if there is a way to address the problems that the last two people had. I'm sure he thinks you can do the job and I would be willing to bet he will do what has to be done to help you succeed.

If you don't take the job, things will go sour with your boss.
