Why is marijuana still illegal? That is an easy one, it cannot be effectively taxed and regulated by the government, unlike tobacco and alcohol. Violating the law makes you a criminal, plain and simple. While I would agree that possession of marijuana for personal recreational use is not even in the same league as murder, rape, or theft, it is still a crime in this country. You throw out a lot of information which could be considered controversial but do not say where you got your information. I would like some citations of your stats: "the jails and prisons in the United states are full of otherwise law abiding citicens who have done nothing more than the recreational use of pot" "we are still pouring countless billions in incarcerating and prosecuting american citizens for this" "something that is truly harmless" "the majority of people are for the decriminalization or legalization and reform of marijuana laws"

No it isn't ...since tobacco isn't legal it is therefore legal to grow it...I think your friends are a little zealous in their attempts to obey the law...perhaps they are demonstrating some child-like mentality to tell tales or adult-like mentality to be in control...in any event if growing tobacco was illegal, then Phillip Morris couldn't grow tobacco in Richmond, VA 23261 and process, pack and ship their product known as Marlboro cigarettes, as well as other companies like R.J. Reynolds...after all, whens the last time you heard someone was arrested for growing tobacco in their backyard or somewhere...this is called an urban myth...myths in general don't seem to bother me much...people are just trying to get attention it seems...although by displaying their ignorance and lack of education I believe society as a whole suffers...our lack of sophistication and reasoning is detrimental to humanities' progression as a whole...truly, if ignorance is bliss, then why do we suffer the ignorant?..

Tobacco is not a controlled substance, therefore it is perfectly legal to grow it on your own land.
