If you think it is sick then take it to a Vet. If its breathing has drastically changed then something is wrong.

More years ago than I can remember, the class pet in my daughter's second grade room was a hamster. When the school year was over, guess where it came. I knew nothing about hamsters, but I found out the hard way. Hamsters are very sensitive to cold, and just the draft along the floor can be enough to make it very sick. If your hamster has gotten sick from a cold draft, then the next thing you will see is what is commonly called "yellow tail" . That is what happens when a hamster gets diarrhea. You hamster may need to see a vet immediately. They can go downhill overnight.

My son's rat had labored breathing a few hours before dying - if your hamster is old like 3 or 4 yrs. then maybe it's dying. Vet said to put it out of its misery then they gave it a shot in the heart, but I think that would be painful for the rat too. I just did what the vet recommended. I don't know why they didn't use gas, it would have seemed more humane.
Is the cage clean? If urine fumes build up, that could be a problem.
Is it preggers - and giving birth soon? lol

It could be dying if its more then 3-5 years old. Or it could have a cold. I have had a bunch of hamsters and I have seen one get a cold. Take it to a vet if you can find one that treats hamsters.
