Drive along the Pacific Coast Highway (State Highway 1) If you're heading from Los Angeles to San Francisco, or vice versa, and aren't in a particular hurry, you won't regret taking the scenic route along the PCH. The road winds along the ocean side of the mountains which run down the California coast, with some spectacular views of the surf as you go. It takes about 6 hours to drive all the way between LA and SF, and the going is slow - it's not really possible to drive at more than 40-50 mph in many areas because even if you're on a straight stretch, chances are the guy in front of you won't be going very fast!

Generally, you will head north on PCH (Route 1). It stays on the coast for the most part, except for parts in Oxnard (Pt. Mugu)
