I was thinkin about the those patients who had been in coma for years and their relatives decided to terminate their life, neglecting the fact that the person may recover. The latest scientific reports say that coma patients with slight brain damage can feel and hear something. Considering that, termination of life would be equal to murder. Would you agree with that?

I agree with you that we shouldn't terminate a life unless of course before the person went into a coma they made an agreement with family members that if anything ever happened I do not want to be dependant on a machine. My kids and husband know that if something ever happens to me and I need some sort of support to keep me alive DO NOT do it. But in a coma without machines just leave me I will snap out of it at some point. Isn't it the same as assisted suicide? That's not legal so why should pulling the plug be legal??

If you can not live without a machine breathing for you, if you are receiving food only through a tube or needle, and if you are completely unconscious is that really living? I don't think so and that is why I will have a living will or advance directive that indicates I don't want such treatment if I have been in a coma or vegetative state for greater than six months. The medical prognosis for someone making a full recovery after being in a coma or vegetative state this long is about nil. I think people should think about this and make sure their feelings are known and in writing so that their loved ones are not put in an difficult position. I am not sure switching off a machine that is the only thing keeping someone alive, especially when they have had no mental consciousness for months is murder.
