Yes, absolutely. gender Identity and sexual attraction are completely different things.

Being MTF means that the person is a female trapped in a males body, and that they wish to fix such a birth defect.

Completely different from that is the fact that the individual is attracted to women.

My wife is attracted to women, making her a lesbian by default, but everyone knows that it is not how she identifies - she identifies as a straight man, trapped in a woman's body. She is FTM.

The real problem is that becoming a transsexual doesn't make you a female to other females. Unless you are open and honest with them about it you might be in for a major rejection. This is the same with transsexual men who want to date males who are also unaware. I would imagine that dating services would provide a better medium than a surprise date. Imagine if people could just switch bodies instead of all of the surgeries. (freaky friday) Maybe they were the opposite sex in a past life anyway. If you were or are a lesbian would you date a transsexual? I had read an article that said the Chinese were doing sexual organ transplants. I would imagine that someone is dying and unwillfully being harvested for these Nazi type experiments. (ugh!!)

I guess so ... but a female phenotype remains a male genotype and technically a lesbian is xx and not xy.

Perhaps postop but I still have a problem with it given the fact that we're not talking genetic female here.
