It's a growing process. We had the same problem about 15 years ago. Ego had a lot to do with it and it can either make or break a community. The good thing is that our community worked it's way through that time and came out mostly intact at the end. We still have plenty of squabbles but some those who were around back then remember how bad it was and try not to let it get that bad again.

Unfortunately, many of our elders are withdrawing from the public community. The numbers of those who went through that time and still go to public events are getting fewer and fewer. And we all know what happens when we don't remember history.

Don't other religious communities have this problem too? What do they do to solve it?

It's not just Chicago, it's everywhere...Terry Pratchett said in one of his books (Wyrd Sisters i think) "too many leaders & not enough followers" and "the only rational size for a coven is 1" I think he must have experienced something similar... I have been invovled in several local communities... and it happens every time... this HPS has more buckles than that HPS and so on & so forth... Witchy is right often times it does have alot to do with ego and / or "third degree syndrome" WHO CARES! bring on the fire pit & spiral dance so we can get to the food!

It is not just Chicago. This is a problem in many areas.

I think it is because some people believe their tradition is older and closer to the ancient ways than those who they consider fluffy. They consider others fluffy because they feel they are not as serious and make them look bad.

In my area it is usually the people who are not initiated into covens with old histories, and they get their knowledge through books and are ordained by the ULC and have many beliefs, practices and theories that are not considered Wicca or true pagan by those in older traditions and paths.

Huh? Could you give a little more detail?

Hmmmm. Well, they're people just like everyone else and they have their differences just like everyone else. Trust me there is drama with or about witches in other cities too.

Oh, I don't know. I think maybe the ones arguing think they are right and everyone else is wrong.
