It's B. Chaucer (the narrator) joined the party of pilgrims at an inn. The following morning, the innkeeper suggested that they have a contest--whoever told the best story on the way to Canterbury would get a free meal at the inn on the return trip. The innkeeper then travelled with them to judge the contest.

From what I can recall from long ago schooldays, the Pilgrims decided to tell tales in order to entertain one another on the long journey.

I can't recall the free meal - though I suppose it is not beyond reason to think that the person who told the most interesting story might receive a 'free meal' (i.e., one paid for by the others) as a reward for his/her prowess.

The purpose of each pilgrim telling two stories was to relieve the boredom of the long slow journey. I really dislike multiple choice questions because even though you know the answer, sometimes it just doesn't seem to fit.
I would have to say that (B) comes closest.
