Hens lay eggs with hard shells. These eggs must be soft at some stage so the sperm can penetrate. When do they become hard?

The egg develops the same way that any female vertebrate's does, give you take a few proteins. The hen is on a cycle of ovulation and release of her eggs. If the egg has not been fertilized it releases upon "menstruation". The unfertilized egg develops its shell prior to release into the cloaca.

what?? the whole of the egg is developed by the sperm..including the hard outer bit...a hen doesn,t carry round empty egg shells waiting to be fertilised

they become hard when the hen is about to lay the egg preveting from the breakage due to some acids present in it
