You think of Zidane and Materazzi? I think both used their own language, knowing the other would understand, as French and Italian have the same roots.
Perhaps Zidane, having played in Italy, spoke also Italian.

With modern football many players change during their career more than once the country where they play and learn so the basics of many languages. If that's not sufficient, they add bodylanguage. A famous case of bodylanguage happened during the World Cup in Mexico.
The German Effenberg has shown his middle finger not to another player, but to the audience. He was after the game taken out of the team and immediately sent home.
