What year is it? How long has it been making this noise? When does it make the noise?(when you stop, turn, all the time, etc) What does it sound like? (a clunk, sqealing, etc) If you could answer these I may be able to help you.

The exhaust system is probably leaking, either from a blown out muffler, tail pipe, exhaust pipe, or a bad catalytic converter!
Sound expensive?---It is!
If you haven't learned the ratio of working to make money to pay for repairs on your car, then you should probably ride the bus!
The fix you're in is like hitching the cart in front of the horse!
Any way, you can't do anything to prolong the life of the exhaust system. And no short cuts to do a temporary fix on it. Not only that, if you drive the car around with a leaking exhaust system, it could, or probably will, put you to sleep permanently!

LOTS of things can cause "strange" noises. You need to give more info. Does it do it stopped and idling, in gear and out of gear?Is it a manual or automatic? Does it do it running down the road?
To me "sounding like a race car" means a high pitched whine caused by the engine doing high RPM. About the only things that would cause that type sound is the alternator, ac compressor, fuel pump, transmission, or water pump.
Give more info please. Also, you might check for a limb caught under the carriage and is dragging on the road. Good luck. Pops

My first guess is that the transmission is slipping. I assume it's an automatic transmission, since it's a minivan. Many transmission shops will offer a free diagnosis. You could check there and see.
I hope I'm wrong - transmission repair is usually expensive!
You can also try the Cartalk car noise guide. Maybe something there will sound like what you're hearing.

By race car - do you mean LOUD! If so, then your exhaust system has a hole in it. Most likely will cost $100 to $200 to fix and replace. A friend might be able to patch the hole with supplies that cost about $20.
Good Luck!

My car does the same thing but only when I'm driving......My car is an automatic and the gears change fine, it's just that it sounds like a race car.

Depends on the noise, too hard to diagnose based on what's been said. What does it sound like? "Like a race car"--loud? That'd be loose or cracked exhaust.
