There is one currently in our fireplace at our new home but it won't hold as much wood and the blower on it makes an awful racket and it's just not very pretty..... chimney sweep says he'll have to take it out to clean the chimney anyway so I may leave it out. What do you think?

You will find that without the insert only half as much heat will remain in the house. An open fireplace draws large amounts of air. The outer rooms away from the fireplace will get very cold. Inserts are much more efficient at heating your home, but you are right, they don't look that nice.

You may want to consider replacing the insert with another more updated one. Like the others said, you will get more out of it with the insert. Besides, there is likely a good reason it was installed in the first place...perhaps the fireplace alone doesn't draft well. Anyway, there are some really attractive ones that are quite efficient, and you don't HAVE to get the blower to go with. If fact, the blowers are usually quite obnoxious.

Moris nailed this one pertty good.
Take his advise.
If you want a insert visit several fireplace shops and get what looks best.
If you dont want the insert, try glass doors to keep the heat in the house, and still enjoy the fire.
