I have a tree rat that comes on my porch quite regularly - I call him Frankie. Frankie doesn't bother me, but he sure bothers the dog! He likes to climb inside my BBQ grill (especially in inclement weather.) Since we have a lot of cats and other animals that wander around the complex, I really don't want to use poison, for fear of poisoning something that's not a rat. How can I convince them to go somewhere else?

You can spray the area with Cinnamon oil. Most rodents don't like the smell. Also, putting out a few mothballs might help. These remedies even work with skunks. Good luck!

I have had this problem with the outside store. They get in through a tiny opening there and they can eat through the toughest of plastic! They only need 1/2 inch to get in, they can climb, they can walk wires and they can even swim so they are tough creatures.
They only thing I can suggest is that you store the grill (if is is portable) inside a closed garden shed or cover with a big metal lid and place something heavy on top. Something they can't eat through.
But- saying that, if the rat is looking for a warm place when it is cold, then it may look for another alternative to the grill to keep warm.

What in the world is a tree rat? I call squirrels tree rats. Hate em with a passion. They wreck my garden and chew up the yard. When I see a nest in the tree, I tear it down. I used to trap them in a havahart trap and would drive them to work with me 36 miles away and let them loose in a forest. But another one always moved in when there was a vacancy in the yard. Kind of like musical squirrels.

How about using your grill to put the poison in. Bait can be found in small bags . Put a couple inside and pray for rain. These bags are eaten in place and not carried out where other animals can get it. Poison in my grill you say! Well it's no worse than dirty rat piss and droppings in you'r grill.

I had the same problem. They got in my grill also. I didn't want to poison them or use traps because I have pets. I know this may sound kinda bad but I used a pellet gun. I lived in a neighborhood so I had to be careful but it did work. If you can't do it find someone with a pellet rifle & good aim a get rid of those nasty varmits.

Rats come around where there is a good source of food. You mentioned dogs, and cats,if you feed them outside,pick up their bowls after they have finished,and also any bits of food they have left on the ground. Make sure your trash cans have tight fitting lids.Get rid of the food source,and you'll get rid of the rats.
