This may seem a silly answer, but I have given it much thought!

Money.

We all want it, and will do anything to get it.
OK, yes there are exception's!

I'm happy with my lot, not much, but health and family is my credit.

All invention's can harm the world, due to greed.

However, it all comes down to the same thing, "money"

The more money you have, the more power!

Power against others can do much harm to others in the wrong hands, and this, in my opinion, is what is happening today.

Mix money and power along with religious believes, and you end up with the world we live in!

The wheel.
If you'll pardon the pun - it started the whole thing rolling.
It gave man the idea of thinking so that he could make his life easier. If the wheel had not been invented (or even just 'discovered'), you would not have any of the technology that you have today.
The thinking was probably brought about by the discovery of the use of fire.
Shame that I can't say 'The Human Brain.' This probably still needs to be discovered!

I really feel that it is automobiles. Aside from the obvious pollution problem caused by autos, I think there is another dark side to autos. When the automobile became common, people started commuting to work and to school, etc. using the car. It's quick and easy to cover long distances in relatively short periods of time. The average commute time increases quite a bit so people are spending less and less time with their families and more time in their cars. Thus, aside from pollution, the autos contribute to the degeneration of our children and our culture in America. I don't believe that this problem is isolated in the US. This may be the root cause of the massive population dip in the EU and elsewhere.

no invention has caused anyone any harm. I know that is stupid to say but all inventions came about because of our need for such because we never seem to stop wanting, needing, we dont get enough of anything.

if we learn to be content with what we have, then we wouldnt have to think of anything more to satisfy ourselves. We wouldnt have to invent and invent things. It is us who harm the world.

In the short term, the internal combustion engine, which has done harm we still are unaware of. In the long term, the invention of mythology, (i.e. religion) which is the root cause of all the war and strife on this planet even to this day.

Undoubtedly weapons and weaponry have been the most harmful invention of mankind. Wars are probably responsible for the dispatch of more than 500,000,000 souls into the hereafter via violent death. Wars played a great part in the expansion of all the empires- Egypt, Babylon, Medo-Persia,Greece, Rome and modern powers like USA, Britain, France, and even the ex powers like Japan, Belgium,Germany. Wars were instruments of the evil trans Atlantic Slave Trade;Wars fuel the crises in the middle East and generate billions of dollars for the worlds military industrial complex!

Agriculture.

Think about it -- it's directly caused overpopulation, desertification, silting and poisoning of waterways, deforestation, ...

Indirectly, it brought about a class of people who didn't have to look for their food, and thus had time to invent most of the other harmful inventions!

It is difficult to pick one individual item as there are so many guns can kill but also save lives. Bomb kill but can also aid in reconstruction IE blowing up huge craters to make way to build things. Knives kill but also aid us IE eating/making things and have saved lives. Baseball bats/cricket bats can kill but also used for sport etc. The list is endless anything that has been invented can not only be used for good but also for bad.
Man is the thing that has caused the most harm to the world so blame adam and eve.

That's a trick question.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Harm is the result of acts committed by people who we would say are misguided. They do things they shouldn't because they don't know any better.

The solution to preventing harm is not to stop inventing, but to help people to use inventions wisely.
