Well I take none of the above with me, unless my car or big rig is showing problems in that area.
Why carry oil with you if your not using excessive amounts. Many places to stop and pick up oil if needed. So leave the mess out of the trunk.
Yes, check the vechicle over for problems that may arise. If you are not sure what to look for? Take it to your nearest mechanic and tell him to check it for a long road trip ahead.
Few basic tools with you if you know how to fix something. If your not a mechanic. Do not add the weight or space occuppied. Ever who you call or stops by and knows what they are doing will have the tools needed. A cell phone is helpful in time of need if you have one. Otherwise many stop and will make the call for you.
have a great trip

I agree, check the levels on everything, if you can, get it done professionally.
But things to take with you are OIL, paper towels, de-icer, kitty litter to give you traction if you get stuck in mud or ice, cell phone, a blanket, flares, bottled water and canned or similar snacks, first aid kit, and those odd necessary things you won't need if you don't have: sewing kit, matches, flashlight, safety pin, small tool kit like screwdriver, clamp, duct tape.
