Conservatives are by definition against change. They want to "conserve" the status quo. Embryonic stem cell research is change, and that is bad.
Here's a timeline for you:
1776: Conservatives are against the Declaration of Independence (We're British! We should stay British!)
1787: Conservatives are against the Bill of Rights (We don't need a document to explain our rights!)
1860: Conservatives support slavery (Slavery is an important part of the economy! We can't change it!)
1890: Conservatives are against the Sherman Anti-Trust Act (We've always had monopolies! They're good for America!)
1920: Conservatives refuse to join the League of Nations (We don't like the rest of the world!)
1933: Conservatives are against the New Deal (Americans don't need social security!)
1939: Conservatives are against World War II (America doesn't need to fight the Nazis!)
1964: Conservatives are against Civil Rights (Blacks don't need civil rights!)
1970s: Conservatives are against equal rights for women (Women don't need equal rights!)
1990: Conservatives are against the Clean Air Act (The government shouldn't control what businesses do!)
There are many, many, many other examples.
So as history has moved forward, conservatives have tried to slow its progress as much as possible. That's what they do. Fortunately for the rest of the country, they usually lose.

What you have put forth in your question and following statements is absolutely false. I am very conservative and have no problem with stem cell research. I am 100% opposed to partial birth abortion or abortion that has been suggested as a possible way to harvest stem cells. Stem cells taken from left over invetro-fertilization don't really bother me, because these "embryos" are not of any use once the parents abandon them. They will not become people. They are a start of human life, but will not become humans. Medical advancement linked to stem cell research has come from using stem cells collected from adults. Researchers began using adult stem cells from bone marrow back in 1960. It was only in 1998 that other researchers were able to isolate and cultivate embryo stem cells. Adult stem cell research thus has an almost four decade head start compared to embryo-derived stem cells. As of 2004-Fall, promising trials are underway using adult stem cells, while stem cells from embryos are still being experimented upon in the laboratory.
There is no real reason to use the embryos as they offer no more advantage to the research than do the adult stem cells.

That's an easy one. Because stem cell research would provide the answers to medical dilemmas that have had scientists baffled for centuries. And when that happens, instead of rejoicing over the fact that people could be cured of deadly diseases and enjoy a better quality of life, the big corporations could no longer bilk the public out of money to keep them in Porsches and cruises around the world. The insurance companies and pharmaceuticals would meet their comeuppance and go belly up, and most important of all, it would violate the right-to-lifers' beliefs that birth control and women having precedence over their own bodies would come to a screeching halt. Instead of improving the lives of those who are already here, they want to over-populate the world so they can whine about how the liberals want to put everyone on welfare. There's method to that madness, you see. Stem cell research would derail the conservative gravy train.

Knock, Knock you expose yourself as uninformed or uneducated with your question.....
You are wrong in too many ways to correct here, but conservatives are not against stem cell research! You need to know the FACTS, not what some propagandist feeds you.
Have the intelligence to actually learn what the facts are BEFORE you make an idiot of yourself....
Conservatives are against cloning embryos for stem cell research, not doing stem cell research on umbilical, adult and other stem cells not requiring a embryo!
The publicity against Michael Fox's commercials were mainly based on his misinformation, not his right to make the commercial.

We are not against stem cell research. This is a patent lie, but a typical leftist-type falsehood.
We fully back government funding of adult stem cell research, blood stem cell research, placental stem cell research, and even support Bush's funding of the existing lines of embryonic stem cell research - research that even Clinton did not fund, by the way.
What we oppose is government funding of new lines of ESCR because that entails the specific destruction of an innocent human life form. Since many of us believe that life begins at conception, this would be a deliberate destruction of an innocent human life. We do not accept this as an appropriate spending of our taxes.
If a private company chooses to pursue ESCR with new lines by killing embryos, nobody is stopping them. The only thing stopping them is that the research has yielded nothing yet, and has no near-term applications, thus no financial gain.
--
aside to greg - Bush said this 5 years ago when he signed this funding, and he re-iterated this when it came up again. Many, many conservatives support this view and have re-stated it many times.
---
Aside to newcastle - the founding fathers were basically conservative and fundamentalist Christian. They mostly WANTED to remain English, to be English citizens, but they were denied this and were warred upon by the King. You need to try sticking to truth, facts and logic, to prove your ideas right, instead of false attacks on others.

There are 2 forms of stem cellular study that i'm conscious of-Embryonic stem cellular reseach and grownup stem cellular study. the version between the two is that with Embryonic stem cellular study, a toddler dies. As for grownup stem cellular reseach, i'm undecided how they try this. notwithstanding, grownup stem cellular study has shown to be bear sturdy outcomes on an identical time as each and each trial of Embryonic stem cellular study that i'm conscious of has been a failure. Conservatives are not against stem cellular study-we are against murdering toddlers.

Not all conservatives are (and not all stem cell research is the same). Even Orin Hatch, Senator from Utah, supports stem cell research.

Sway, your answer isn't clear. This is the first I have heard of your statement that you are against the funding of it as the reason for not supporting ESCR. Your peers never mention that, instead stating it would lead to abortions ( there are already enough abortions in the USA to allow for embryonic donors of stem cells ). Your answer implies the cons are against saving lives and curing diseases because taxpayers are paying for it.

Dunno. I guess they see it that if God didn't make it a way, it shouldn't be that way. They said "if man were meant to fly, God would have given him wings", but fail to realize that He gave them something just as good: two intelligent brothers with the last name Wright who had the aspiration and determination to join those birds in the air. God gave us all the intelligence, determination, and capacity to do whatever we want to do. The question is, will you take it into your own hands and actually do something with it?
