There are two answers to this question

1. To make the handle bigger
2. To keep sweat from making the handle slippery. Most of the overgrips are designed to absorb sweat and keep the handle tacky.

1) to make your grip bigger

2) your grip gets really sweaty and slippery. when putting on overgrips, it gives the player more of a grip on the racquet. Also when putting on a second overgrip, make sure you take the first one off, it may get kind of big. Thank you so much for reminding me about overgrips! I have a tournament this weekend and thats what I forgot to get.

mainly in order to protect the main grip overgrips are cheap and easy to use, they are relatively comfortable and i would rather drop $14 for 10 overgrips than spend $15 for 3 regular grips.

To make the handle larger. Depending on how big your hand is, and how tight of a grip you like ot have. That is why they all come with diffrent size grips on them. But, any really good player knows that a larger grip cuts down on the force needed to hold the raquet and the vibration caused by striking the ball.

There are many reasons that they use over grips. One is that it makes the grip larger, they are easier to replace because the backs aren't as sticky, and they are cheaper than normal grips. Especially that TournaGrip that is slip proof and dosen't get wet with hand sweat when you are in the heat of the day. I use that same brand and I love them.
