I think they are one in the same.
Look at the Communist Manifesto and you will see that the liberals, and some republicans, are following it to the letter.

Liberal mentality was quite present long before communism. Liberalism is the left of the plane, Socialism is on the edge and Communism is over the edge. Kinda like the stages of Conservatism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism.
