...and here it is: If conservatives are so "closed-minded" and liberals are so "tolerant", then why are the conservative speakers the ones who get heckled off the stages with pies in their faces?

Does "Mallard Filmore" really count as a comic strip? There is never a punchline, never any humor. I understand that many self-proclaimed conservatives have no sense of humor, but this "strip" could at least pretend to have things like plot, character development, or a punchline.

To answer your question, liberal comes from the Latin "liber" meaning "free". Conservative comes from the Latin "servare", "to keep or maintain." Liberals therefore are interested in freedom, while conservatives want to maintain the status quo. Tolerance and close-mindedness aren't necessarily part of the equation.

If you think America is perfect as is, then you are conservative. If you think America can be better in the future, then you are progressive. If you think America was better in the past, then you are regressive. That's all there is to it.
