They feel there's strength in numbers, so they're more likely to become friends with anyone who'll take them into their group of firends. Oftentimes, they won't realize such factors as personality compatibility, feeling truly welcomed, etc. until it's too late.

If you have a true friend that, true friend might tell you where your wrong, because they care about you, a true friend should be able to speak truth into your life, people who surround them selves with yes men or women, people who surround themselves with fake people are insecure, and they can't take helpful criticism, they would rather never hear of there character flaws, then have someone point them out to them, they also have intimacy issues, and trust issues

Don't want to miss out on the action....
My daughter does that...It's crazy...but I know what you're talking about. I'd much rather have "one" good friend...then 20 soso friends. Ya know?
In fact...I do ! ! It's okay to have lot of friends, "acquaintances" but you should only count on a chosen few....
People just like drama I think....They might claim they don't, but in the end it's all about the talk.......So the more people you have to talk with, the more drama you have I suppose. My daughter knows damn well most of the people she hangs around are going to end up using her in one way or another, but she doesn't care....She's still young......She'll learn. When the going gets tough, your true friends are the ones that'll help you move...or bury the body...which ever comes first.......hahahahaha ! !
good luck! ! !

They may do this to make themselves feel part of a group, or to be seen by others with these people to befriend them. If they are seen alone, there is less chance of people approaching them than when they are with these 'fake' friends.

Yeah, I had a friend like that. And she came crying to me when they ditched her. Some people are all about the social climbing. They want to be popular. How many popular people do you know that are nice "true" friends? Not many!

Well for one thing if the person is popular at school that's one reason and the other reason is that if it is a girl they want to have a boyfriend and if it is a boy they want a girlfriend that's why they hang around them

Why do you feel compelled to tell others how many "friends" they can have? It shouldn't matter to you one bit if they are not hurting you, honey. Some people like quantity more than quality. So what? Those are not called friends, they are called acquaintances...and there is no limit on them. When you grow up, you might understand. Godloveya.

It's because they only care about what other people percieve them as being. To some people, popularity is everything...
