Any suggestions on how to spend an hour in London? off the beaten path is fine.

If you only have one hour then it's probably going to have to be spent close to whatever airport/train station you are passing through. You really don't have time to go anywhere and get back in one hour. If you have travel time plus an hour I'd suggest taking a walk along the river in the area of Westminster/Embankment. You can take the tube to one of those stops and walk along the river to the other station. It's not far and on the walk you'll see the London Eye, House of Parliment, Big Ben and lots of people and life. You're also just a block or so from Westminster Abbey when you are at Westminster tube station.
Another suggestion is Covent Garden. It's fun and lively. There's lots of shopping, street performers, cafes, etc.
