It is a marketing thing - basically he sold as many jerseys as he could with 8 and by switching to 24, he is going to have all of his fans out buying the new 24 jersey.

i beleive he had the number in high school and he wanted to use it in the nba at first but it was taken. so he decided to use 8 for one half of his career, and his old hs number the 2nd half.
