I quit cutting mine down for winter as I'd get too much winter kill. If it is overwhelming and snow damage prone, cut to about 3-4 feet, then wait until next spring when it leafs out to determine how much you want to cut.

While you can cut evenly down, I've started to stagger cut. I leave some longer while others get cut down quite low. Then next year those that were left longer will have a thicker, ugly stem which I will cut low or eliminate and those cut low this year will still be slender enough to still look good. Follow what I'm doing. I try not to have any stem more than 2....sometimes 3 years old so I don't get the uglies inside the shrub. Clear as mud, huh?

According to what i saw on a gardening prog on tv recently, you should cut it down to about knee height but not until spring.
