I know it's in the NFL rules that games can be cancelled due to dangerous weather and I seem to recall it happening in Buffalo a couple of years ago but my memory could be faulty.

Also, does anyone know how many NFL games have been cancelled in the past five years or so (not counting the weeks post-9/11)?

Nfl Game Weather

Labroador and school asn't closed unless you couldn't see accross the road, and that could be dangerous with the distance some people had to travel to get to school/back home. I've seen storms close school there for a full week, with the highay blocked with 3-10 feet of sno for miles and miles. I lived in Corner Brook, NL while going to university, and the weather can get very bad there and things still run. Sometimes, the weather would clear up not long after classes were cancelled, sometimes the storm could go into the following day. The intense driving conditions warrant it. What call is made is based on severity and on past experience. "Some ice" sounds like an excuse for a snow day, but winter storms that don't allow you to go play in the snow or even make it to the hospital in an emergency....close the school!

No NFL game has ever been canceled or postponed? When there's severe weather all they do is wait it out. There have even been some games continue well after midnight when the game started at like 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

The last time a game was cancelled was September 13, 2001.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue's statement on calling off this weekend's games:

We in the National Football League have decided that our priorities for this weekend are to pause, grieve, and reflect. It is a time to tend to families and neighbors and all those wounded by these horrific acts of terrorism.

We understand those individuals in sports who want to play this weekend. We also can empathize with those who want to take the weekend off and resume their personal lives and professional careers next week. We strongly believe that the latter course of action is the right decision for the NFL.

On Sunday, September 23, the NFL, its players and coaches will return stronger than ever and resume our playing schedule.

A decision on whether to re-schedule this weekend's games or play a 15-game regular season schedule is under consideration and will be announced as soon as possible.

New Orleans had to cancel for Katrina too.

The NFL is not going to cancel a regular season game. There's a difference between "cancel" and "postpone." All of the 9/11 games were resheduled to the end of the season.

I've seen a few pre-season games cancelled because of lightning but I don't think a regular season or playoff game has ever been cancelled.

The Saints had to cancel (and reschedule) a game during the flood in New Orleans. Does that count?

only if it's lightning right before the game and they don't think that it will stop before the game is supposed to start then they'll cancel
