Whenever i go out to socialise i dread awkward silence,i usually say anything just to avoid one from happening and then i feel like it's obvious i'm forcing lame conversation. I'm shy anyway and always feel the silence is my fault, any advice how i can prevent this?

DO'NT fear them. Laugh at them if they bother you that much! Point them out and say well there's one of those AS's again! We have to stop speaking sometimes. If that doesn't work use simple questions. Ask how people are, whats going on with their lives. Everyone's got something to get off there chest, just give them a listening ear!

These people you're speaking to probably don't like the awkward silences, also. So, either think of something you have in common with that person (interests, or the venue you're meeting) OR just let the silence happen. It's not as if silence ever killed anyone, eh!

Yes, I do hate them. I dislike them enough that I've stopped having full length conversations all together. I speak when spoken to and don't add any information not asked for.

Awkward silences are usually caused by other people. All this politically correctness lends people to not respond to what's being said to them. I personally could never run out of things to say, I just stopped talking to avoid the conflict..

Sit in silence for 2 days, say nothing.

You, at the moment, need to make conversation about random stuff, don't know why you just do. But just enjoying the fact someone is there is good enough. When you want to say something you can, but mindless babble will water down you relationship with your friends.

be comfortable that they are there with you.

Get used to the silence by sitting in a room on your own.

Change the crowd you mix with.
You are supposed to go out to enjoy yourself not sit there trying to contain a lot of dumb wits who think more about appearances than life?
Try passing wind then raise your eyebrows
Someone will say something?
