MTV.
CMTV has killed country music. Just think about this, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr would NEVER make it in today's music industry.
since the inception of videos, the move has been towards style over substance; looks over talent. That's what started it. Now the RIAA is doing everything in it's power to drive the final nails into the coffin of music.
There are some standouts on the radio today, but they only stand so tall because everyone around them is so dam short.
"Its not dead! Young people interested in music will discover in time how awesome LED ZEPPLIN was or how the guitar riffs derived from blues greats jump started rock n roll. Its only rocknroll but I like it!"
----- That's the point. Who was the last GREAT band.....the one that transcends generations and genres because the lyrics were inspirational and thought provoking at the same time the music was delivered with awe inspiring talent? I'd say Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and Aerosmith are the last of that. Don't tell me U2 should be there, they don't deserve to share the same oxygen as the other 3.

Actually, this same cycle already happened over 30 years ago. Punk was a direct response to the decadence of the 70's rock-celebrity scene of bands like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin etc. The Sex Pistols were deliberately trying to overthrow that whole concept of "rock star as god" that was happening at that time. And somehow, we got back into it in the '80's, which enabled Nirvana and other grunge rockers to rebel against it again in the 90's! So this is not the end for rock. Nothing ever will be... :-)

Rock and roll isn't dead just most of the rock and roll fans have died and the younger generation are closet rock and rollers because "RAP" crap is suppose to me the "IN" music.

it isn't dead. MTV and the music corporations had it cryogencally frozen so they could harvest organs from it to put into their production line bands. that's why music today sounds so familiar but without the soul or originality. i must add that i do think the artic moneys should not be included as one of the contemporary Frankenstein's monsters of music. their lyrics are good, the music is driving and i like the fact that they sing with their Sheffield accents.

I don't believe it's dead, but video and image and all the nonsense that goes with it, I believe, has been a contributor. The quaility of rock music started going downhill drastically after video became popular.

The culture industry; the way the music buisness changed music from art to consumer product...
The concept of music videos...
The people who consume commercial music...
If I had time, I could go on in depth and detail but unfortunatly I am at work; you'll have to contend with these micro-explanations!
Cheers!
