How many people dress up? What stars are there? What kind of cool stuff is for sale? Is it worth the price of admission? Any tips would be helpful.

Personally, I have only gone to a couple of conventions.
Yeah, there will be people dressed up, but not as many as you would be led to believe. Only about 1 in 10 are in full costume. Most might just wear a star trek t-shirt or something.
Sometimes they have a surprise actor or 2, but most of the time it's only whoever they were publicizing to be there.
There will be all kinds of collectors and items for sale. In the two I went to, you did not have to pay admission to get to the vendors. Admission was for getting in to see whoever was speaking and to some of the special events.
There are usually rooms where they have big screen TV's showing the DVD's from the series.
There are lot of nerds, sure... but alot of "normal" people as well. Just because you are a fan of a show and are interested in the chance to hear an actor or actess talk about it in person or would like to buy a tee-shirt, doesn't automatically make you a nerd.
In my case... yeah, I'm a nerd. (Married with 5 kids, but still a nerd.) I've never dressed in costume for a convention.

a lot of people dress up...# of stars varies and they charge for their autographs there is a ton of cool stuff to buy....my advice...set a budget and stick to it.....meet lots of people and enjoy!!!
