Disagree, but not to say that he wasn't one of the most influential artists ever, if not THE most influential.

The man could sing - boy, could he sing! But it's not just his vocal talent that made him a legend. Otherwise, he'd have been just another country singer out of Tennessee. It's the fact that this was a white man who sounded black. And in those days, it's this crossing of the cultural divide that endeared him to the young people, and courted controversy among the older. Swivel your hips, man! And let's not forget that the man practically laid the paving stones for rock and roll by doing this...

In later years, when Elvis changed direction, he was one of the first to prove his versatility as a performer in several musical genres. This, though, doesn't make him the greatest - it makes him the first. It's hard to compare anyone to Elvis, as he was a pioneer. I think that there are others out there who are on the same level as performers, but because they've had someone do it before them, they can never compare.

So, not the greatest of all time, but one of the greatest - and the first one.

No he wasn't. I remember him starting (I'm that old) and much of his success was due to the hype generated at the time, remember 'Elvis the Pelvis'. American TV was so incensed by the way he moved they banned shots of him below the waist. Naturally that created huge interest in teenage girls' perception of him. His early records, although sang well, had poor and cheap backing and sound as if they were made on a shoestring but when It's Now or Never' came out I think we had the best of Elvis. Then of course Hollywood got hold of him and we had a series of embarrassing films used as moneyspinners although with about three or four exceptions (G I Blues, Blue Hawaii, Love Me Tender) most of them flopped. Who remembers Kissing Cousins or Kid Galahad? Sadly as he aged his performances degenerated also and by the time he got to the Las Vegas years he was a mumbling shell of his late 50's and 60's persona. There were, of course, many other performers just as good if not better. The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Frankie Valli to name a few and even the old crooners, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and so on were better technical performers. Still it's everyone to his own I suppose so if you enjoy his music then go for it.

Elvis was a good performer, but the greatest singer of all time, not sure I can agree with you on that one. One of my good friends would definitely agree with you though. She's totally IN LOVE with Elvis. She's a hair dresser and has her salon decorated with Elvis memorabilia. She goes to see all the Elvis impersonators as well. I'll agree that Elvis had alot of charisma and was a major influence on how music evolved but just can't say he was the best.

As a performer no one will ever reach his level he was simply in a class of his own , As a singer he probably wasnt THE best ever but given the range of vocal styles he could carry off he was right up there with the best.

Elvis did not appeal to everyone he was OK and a nice sort of guy also, but there were a lot of good singers around at his time and to me he was surpassed by a lot of them not necessarily in rock but ballad singers

He was the most popular entertainer of all time. You only have to go to an opera to find out he was by no means the greatest singer of all time.
