Some cab drivers put their cabs in neutral at a stop light. What is this supposed to do for the car? I can't imagine any advantage.

i own a repair shop and the only thing it could help with would be over heating ,if it was at an idle for a long time it might help circulate the coolant a little faster ,but not really that much ,because it don't circulate that much anyway at an idle so i guess maybe there used to setting in traffic jams and maybe in some cases it has helped them, who knows,if they think it helps ,i guess that's what counts, good luck i hope this help,.

I can only imagine a couple reasons, save on gas consumption by having the rpm drop while in neutral, if the cabbie is use to being distracted with some sort of paperwork having the habit of placing the car in neutral or park would keep them from rolling away.
The newer hybrid cars being introduced do this automatically, so there must be a reason for conservation in there somehow.

It will help cool the transmission fluid. Not practical for everyday driving, but I suppose it helps them considering the extreme stop and go driving conditions they experience.

cab drivers are hard on brakes so this is to take the load off the pads .

I guess because you don't want to keep your foot on the brake. If it's in gear, you'd roll.
