My vote would have to be Joy Division. Beautiful vocals sung by a talented singer (Ian Curtis), and brilliant innovative instrumentals.
The other thing about Joy Division as well is that they could just come onto stage and sing/play instruments- many of their concerts and gigs featured bad lighting, tiny stages, poor sound systems/volume control and often technical breakdowns. But they would still be able to belt out some of the best music in the world regardless. What you saw was what you got.
The band also showed that they were very much human- fluffed notes, forgotten lines and ad lib performances were also part of the act- a world away from the perfectly rehersed, CD sound quailty of the pop world today. These mistakes showed the fans the members were only human and down to earth. Amazing.
PS I do like New Order as well and know they occasionally do JD covers, but JD songs without Ian Curtis is like a boat without a sail- going nowhere.

So many of them now gone could have made it in the world of today... and yet alot wouldn't have passed the test of time... Old "rockers" like The Doors or Led Zep or even The Beatles could probably not have survived the massive changes in the culture industry's musical stylings since the 80s, going thru the 90s and into the 21th century... However, since they were somewhat "groundbreaking" even in their day, there's no telling how they could have adapted to the ever-changing demands of the culture industry.

Personnally, I would have loved to see:
- Throbbing Gristle in 1978 or 1979
- Elvis Presley back in the early 60s
- Jimi Hendrix, anytime, anywhere
- Led Zep, right after the release of "Led Zep 3"
- Tonto's Expanding Headband
- Hawkwind
- Intersystems
- H.N.A.S.
- The Stray Cats

... and of course, Queen being quite a good choice; they did do "magic" after all!

Cheers!

Even though I love so many other bands got to agree that queen with Freddie at his most dazzlingly beautiful, brilliant and vocally
genius was something I feel truly sorry so many of younger generations have missed. Saw Queen last summer in Hyde Park and sad to say I thought it just a poor imitation of the real
band with the divine Freddie in. Only other band would be INXS
saw them on thehir first UK tour as support act and Mike hutchinson was a super star in the making- sadly dont think we ever got to see the best of him.

AC/DC with Bon Scott, the old Green Day (really old, like 1993 or something), Rage Against the Machine, Led Zeppelin, and definitely Queen.

The ORIGINAL Guns n' Roses, Queen, AC/DC (Bon Scott Days), The Sex Pistols, Nirvana... Also I would have liked to have seen Green Day during the Dookie/Insomniac days.

Led Zeppelin would've been great. A modern band would've been the original Alice in Chains. It sucks to know that you can never see your favorite bands in person because of a death - like Queen.

The Beatles of course, but I'm cheating. I saw them twice and they were the best. Don't forget that this was in the days before light effects, smoke, backing dancers and all the other hype that comes with modern performances, just four lads on stage playing and singing the best music ever.
