For funny short stories, I'd recommend some Dorothy Parker. Most libraries should have a series of books featuring her short stories.

Don't know your taste in books but a current popular writer is Janet Evonavich about a woman bounty hunter. Also any Robert Parker book...he is really tongue in cheek and when I am in a bad mood, I just pick up a Parker book. Fast reads and funny.

Rape of the A.P.E. by Allan Sherman. It is an older book, but very funny. A.P.E. stands for American Puritan Ethnic. Or anything by either George Carlin or Steve Martin.
