.in is the domain & thats for india like .us for united states, .ch for china, .au for australia & the list goes on. Not all but few websites create websites with different domains ( classified by countries ) as these websites are of companies that are global and provide services worldwide & they wanna give a personalise touch to the website depending on the country.

Like for eg the services that google provides in india would not be the same in US. another Eg. is on our indipence day the google logo would have a flag or on diwali it'll have crackers but they cant have the same for US or china right as they are not celebrating it.

Now how it happens is that they track our IP and according to that they make out what country & as per that it opens the country domain.

It usually opens up in the country that you are residing. If i type in google.com it takes me to the uk website as I reside in the UK, so if you live in India, that is why.

it may just be a glitch in the system. I had problems for a few days when ever I typed www.ebay.com it would take me to the Canadian version (something like www.ebay.ca) but after a few days it went back to normal.
