First, ZACK, the back stories create most of the drama of the show. Who would care that Sun was pregnant w/o the backstory? Who still wants to know why Locke was in a wheelchair? He walks in most of his backstories! What is up w/ Hurley's ex-girlfriend? What is Desmond's TRUE connection to the island?
Speaking of which, the answer is yes, but both Sayid & Jin have him beat on looks & accent!

Agreed :) But such a shame Hurley had to lend him his clothes to wear, eh? I'd rather see a naked Desmond flying out of the jungle than the polar bears, yes? ^_~
I read an interview in the T.V. Guide magazine 2 weeks ago w/ Desmond. He said he was actually wearing a thong in the scene w/ Hurley when he was supposed to be naked. He said that after wearing it a while, he found it comfortable, but then added "That can't be good, right?!" LOL.
And yes, the accent is to die for. :)

The new season hasn't started in Australia yet. :(
But yes Desmonds accent is sexy, I remember from last season.
