Why is it that I have so much static in my hair and clothes in the winter? When I brush my hair I can hear it popping and my hair sticks up all over. When I touch metal I get shocked, regardless if I touch it through my clothes or not. This is very annoying and I would like to know why this happens to me, what causes it and what can I do to suppress it. Walk around in a freaking dryer sheet?? LOL

the Static Guard stuff works for me. I personally used it for hair and clothes. I think you can find it at the grocery store or a walmart in the laundry detergent isle.

The reason you are getting shocked is because of two reasons: 1) The air is dry, and you can build up a static charge more readily. 2) You need to hydrate a little more. Drinking water lowers the shock you feel.

When you go to touch something metal, discharge it through a key, or some other object. The sting you feel is the transfer on ions from you body to an object; essentially your are getting burned.

Discharging through a key prevents you from getting burned or "shocked".

You must live in a dry area- go with lots of lotion and a good deep conditioner. Try drying your clothes for a little less time-keep them from overdrying. You might even want to consider using a humidifier in your house for a little time each day.

Use a humidifier (put more moisture into the air!), that cuts down on the static build up.

Static electricity builds up on things much more easily when the humidity is low. If you ran a dehumidifier where you are, it would help cut down on the shocks.
