I have several holes on my property. The are all exactly alike: 2-l/2 ft. deep, 1 foot in circumference. They just appeared this year, and I can't get anyone out to tell me what it is. It's not an animal because there is no dirt or grass scattered around.

A real sink hole is much deeper. The ones they have in Kentucky come from when acidic rain water goes down cracks and hits the limestone caves underneath the ground. That limestone of the cave roof is eaten away and a deep hole forms hidden by the dirt on top. Eventually the hole 's covering drops down into the pit and you have a sink hole that goes down hundreds of feet.

There are also sink holes less deep formed when a water main breaks and the dirt washes out to make a hole ten feet deep and big enough to hold your car.

A foot in circumference is not very wide. Maybe there had been poles to hold up a volleyball net there that were pulled out. If there is no dirt or grass scattered around it sounds like someone was using a coring tool to take samples in your property. Maybe they were looking for a missing oil tank or for an underground spring.

Every house in my neighborhood had a sink hole.It was caused by a cheap builder that dug holes to put his building garbage in rather than rent a dumpster.

The holes contain everything from trees, leaves and wood but also half eaten food , beer bottles and so on.

You cannot see these things anymore since they have decade and left the hole.

I keep filling it up with leaves.
Good luck

Their has to be an opening below, probably caused by water, such as an old drain field, dig one up to get to the bottom of it, no pun intended.
