1. pick up something you would like to read.
2. mark out the extent to which you want to read, like a chapter, a page, a para, etc.
3. at the end of this try to recall what you have read. reread when your recall is not accurate.
4. this is a slow and time consuming process. keep the extent constant until you find you are ready to increase it.

One idea that might be helpful is to read in a quiet room, where there is no tv, radio, or other distractions to break your concentration! Put a do not disturb sign on the doorknob if you have to... but do your best to be away from other people, as well as telephone calls if you can... just spend some time alone and read your book! Even if it's only for an hour a day... it will be good
If you are talking about this problem while in school, that might be a different situation... talk to your teachers, there are some classes that have a quiet study time in the school's library...
Good luck with your reading... I have had the same problem! ;0)

You can only concentrate properly for very short periods of time, probably about 20 mins or so. When your mind starts to wander look away from your book for a moment and take a few deep breaths to relax. Have a proper break every hour or so for 5 - 10 mins, or you won't really take in what you're reading.

Read what you are interested in. IF it is required reading and you have no interest other than this, then I suggest you get into a group reading and discussion setting. Make a study group out of it. Read out loud, to the group, a few pages and then talk about what you just read. It will help you to retain the knowledge. This allows you to get a different perspective and more ideas about the book. I hope this helps you.

it depends why you are reading. if you are reading for a hobby then the first suggestion would be to read something you're actually interested in. if it's for study purposes, it isn't a great idea to sit and read in huge blocks because you won't take much in. read a chapter, then go back over it with a highlighter and mark out the more important points to force your mind to go do a double take on the information it has to take in.
generally, it is better to read whilst sitting comfortably, with decent light, and as little background noise and distraction as possible - definately not whilst listening to music, watching tv, or while somebody is trying to have a conversation with you.

it's also much easier to take in information and read when you first wake up, rather than at night before bed, so if you commute to work/college, the train in the morning is a perfect opportunity.

Picture how you would make the movie either of the book or based on the information in it. Decide actors and setting. Then the book turns into a movie in your head while you read.

I cannot concentrate by reading silently, so try reading aloud as if you are reading to a person.
