I suggest doing a search for zombies in Haitian folklore. Haitians believe a zombie is a person without a soul. A Bokor uses a special concoction and gives it to a person (either powder or ointment). It contains pufferfish and other toxins to make the person appear as if they are dead. They are buried and the Bokor goes to the grave and digs the person up. This person would then believe they were brought back from the dead and they become a slave to the Bokor. The Bokor then gives them other toxins that make them "slow" or not right on the head, unable to think for themselves.

One documented case that is very popular is Clarvius Narcissis. He claimed to be a zombie. He escaped from the Bokor's plantation were he and about 100 other people were kept as slaves. Read "The Serpent and the Rainbow" by Wade Davis. His book goes into detail about zombification and how it is done in Haiti.

p.s. This is not a practice of Vodou. It is done by secret societies in Haiti as punishment for criminals.
