There are a lot of people, both on this site and in the world at large, who harp on about how we are headed for the end of the world and that human kind is swiftly falling towards some apocalyptic doomsday (religiously oriented or otherwise).
Do you believe this is so, or is it more likely that we are just experiencing another low in our cultural evolution where great advances in technology, medical science and multi-culturalism are balanced out by rising crime figures, world conflicts, corrupted youth culture and more and more cases of obesity and ignorance?
What do you think? Is it time yet to barricade ourselves in our homes with whatever weaponry we have handy and await armageddon, or is tomorrow always a brighter day?
Serious answers only please. Thank you!

oblivion is very final...so only if the world is consumed will society crumble into oblivion...
Society by definition is an interaction of a number of people....therefore, a society can be any interaction between folks regardless of whether or not we agree with the ethics of that society.....if by crumbling you mean it evolves into something you disagree with yes,,,it will do that from time to time for one group of people (minorities) or another...cant please all the people all the time...real options are some people all the time or all the people some of the time.

People are bringing in changes but not preparing first they're not thinking how it will really affect the masses.. Take UK look at the crap thatcher caused ripping the heart out the country by taking away our biggest industry which was mining we still haven't recovered from that yet they're continuing to rush change before the masses are ready for it.. They don't give themselves time to stop and pause and think hold on a min this is going horribly wrong we need to fix this before it gets out of hand.. they just keep repeating the same old mistakes instead of sticking with tried tested and proved to work methods... Yes new is good when absolutely needed but why replace something that works perfectly OK it's all about greed now and competition and wanting more and more and more and being better than someone else it's all about egos.. It's time to stop rushing change and start letting people catch up after all it has been PROVED some are slower and poorer than others

The human race is relatively young compared to all of the stages of evolution we have ever had on earth and is continually evolving all of the time. Our time will come when we do become extinct like the dinasaurs and when this will be is not known. A great deal depends upon environmental factors such as global warming or cooling and natural disaster that are imminent and essential to the life-cycle and so apocalyptic events are a reality and what had wiped out the dinasaurs.
I think that there is some truth in the fact when social moral is low, there is a tendancy for us all to meditate upon the possibilities of apocalyptic eventualities and this is very much heightened by the media attention upon environmental change that is curently a reality in our midsts. The church has very little influence than it did say, some hundred years ago and in the past and so that would have been the alternative 'media' to the one we have now, but again, the message was still very strong then that we were in the grips of creeping death.
This had served the purpose of keeping the populace fearful and so that this would also serve the purpose of maintaining social control over them too. But, apocalypse is something that looms regardless of the media because as humans, we know so very little about why we are here and our true purpose in life to which makes us wonder if we are immortal or not (if we will be suceeded and how long for) etc etc, and given that we are part of something so much bigger than ourselves, such as the universe, scientists and astronomers cannot gives us any certainties whatsoever about our long-term survival as a living species.
It is just that the media brings to our attention what we already deliberate. It is also a known fact that we have gone through one massive technological revolution just 150 years ago and it is this that we have created so many gas emmissions and toxic wastes we never really took the time in all of the excitement at the time, to question what these wonderful advances to improve the quality of our lives, would in fact do to our environment. Buisness merchants were not concerned with the cost of manufacture.
Now, however, this has come to our attention, and we are seeing very advaced global climate change that we are certain are primarily because of environmental pollution (this is true) but there are also factors that play a role too and like the media, we are frightening ourselves into an early stroke!. No longer do we enjoy the natural world and feel the connectedness we once had with it and so the further removed we have become over time, the less about nature we understand.
We go for outings to the country and watch nature programmes, but we do not live amongst the trees and grounds we once did and knew the properties of the land and how they worked. This removal from nature, means that we are don't know how best to work with it and it takes more than a handful of geologists and conservation peoples to nurture it and heal it back to health. People are fully aware of this and when the government try to impliment strategies to harness gas emissions etc, they are only dealing with things on the surface.
It is our ignornace that has come to shock us more than the media and many of us are dissatisfied living in towns where we cannot control our environments. The abuse of the planet is not going to go away whilst we live in an industrialized world where the money comes from and so forth, we are not going to have the kind of influence over an eventual global catastrophe that is absoloute imminent.
We no longer understand the value of living in a community because we are taught to be alienated and self-seeking and yet, what we really strive for is connectedness with one another and with the natural planet (this is not hippy trash talk) we all long for it and is the reason why crime is prevalent for example, because societal expectations are far too high for many people to live up to and what most of us really desire is a sense of community that proved for centuries to be the best way of living.
No, barricading yourself in your room is not the idea, but to feel that you have some say and some infleunce over the preservation of our world, millions of people are now active in the movement to save our planet in small ways that they can and do but this isn't going to save us. Apocalypse is going to happen regardless and not because of any god, but because all living species has a limited time on this earth. Getting the most out of life is the solution as that is the only thing anyone can do.

We are governed by Genes. They are the driving force behind evolution. If they don't like the way things are going then they simply change the genetic layout(the letter sequence) and head off in the direction they prefer. If that means bringing a dominant species to a halt, then so be it. They are selfish and unchangeable!. And there is nothing me or you can do about it.
Genes release small changes in the environment to influence new species. All creatures are controlled by these events, creating hardships for one, a future for others.
