no it is not recommended to lay on your back, because the the baby's weight will be obstructing blood flow tru ur major artery and that could decrease the blood getting to ur baby tru placenta and to your brain as well. the left side is the best and u could put pillows for comfort.

I have heard the same, and was told also to avoid laying on my back. But I was also high risk, so they were doing everything they could to make it better for baby. It's not that the baby won't get oxygen if you lay on your back, but rather it can decrease the amounts they get. Laying on your left side is the best way to increase blood flow to your baby.

I don't know about that. I was told the baby lays on a major blood vessel. I didn't do it very much because laying on my back made me very lightheaded. Laying on your side is best way to go at 36 weeks. You're almost there. It won't be long before you can lay not only on your back but your stomach as well (I missed that while I was pregnant.)

i don't believe that, nor have i ever heard of that. i know it's harder for the mother to breathe when they lay on their back because it was for me up until i reached about 36 weeks. now i can lay on my back comfortably. i found i am sleeping better that way too. i will be 37 weeks next wednesday. my heartburn has also decreased. it's probably best to lay on your left side because in the books, it says that your baby will get the most blood flow and it will be more comfortable for you but i found that i can't stay on my side for a very long time because my hip will start hurting which will make my legs and back start hurting. so i guess whatever position you feel most comfortable is the best. just try not to lay on your stomach.

You can lie down on your back, but I have also heard that it can cut off some of the oxygen supply for the baby. Because everything is being pressed down everything gets out of sorts...
I know its hard to get comfy... if you have to lay on your back, try using a couple pillows behind your head, so your not totally flat....

There is a major artery that runs behind your uterus and when you lay on your back the uterus lays on top of the artery decreasing the blood flow to your baby. That is way they say not to lay flat on your back. If you lay down with pillows under your head and back to keep you propped up you should be OK. Or if you lay down in a lazy boy chair.

Our Dr. told us that you can lay on your back, but not for very long periods of time. The weight of the baby pressing down can restrict your blood flow. The best way to do it is propped up on pillows. ( 37 weeks with our 3rd child)

Do not lay on your back. The baby will compress the aorta and the inferior vena cava and it will be hard for you to get oxygen. You should be lying on one of your sides. The left side is better for the baby.

All that is true about blood flow being restricted if you're on your back. Which, if you think about it, makes it absolutely crazy that doctors expect you to be on your back during labor -- for their convenience, obviously, not for the health of the baby.

your right the reason is all that weight is not sitting on your lungs making it very hard for you to breath. if you cant breath then neither is the baby common sense in a way
